Nothing.

Darkness.

Then...

Something. Tara was aware of nothing but herself. Of not being where she had been. Of somewhere unknown.

"Where am I?"

A voice in the darkness. Melifluous, gentle, knowing.

"Welcome, thrice-blessed Tara, to the threshold of a new life."

She tried to curl up, protect herself somehow from this voice that she heard and didn't hear.

"I feel...strange."

"Soma, the nectar of the Gods, has been mingled with your blood. The strangeness will soon pass."

"What's happening to me?"

"Don't be afraid, Tara. I will be with you soon. But before that, a few friends wish to meet you."

A child, a small girl. An older woman. A woman her age. A young man. A crone. All shadowy and indistinct.

"HELLO, TARA."

The child drew her attention, she was familiar.

"Who are you?"

"WE ARE TARA.
TARA AS YOU MIGHT HAVE BEEN".

"TARA AS YOU WERE. "

"TARA AS YOU ARE NOT. "

"TARA AS YOU DREAM OF BEING."

"TARA AS YOU'LL NEVER BE. "

"I'm dreaming."

"NO"

"YOU'RE CHANGING"

"AS WE DID. OR MIGHT HAVE."

"What?"

"THIS IS WHERE OUR TARAS MEET."

"AND WE CAME HERE
TO SAY GOODBYE. AND HELLO.
"

"AND THANK YOUR FOR HAVING BEEN
WITH US. FOR HAVING BEEN US.
"

"AND TO SAY -- WE'LL SEE YOU SOON, TARA-THAT-IS."

"WHEN YOU JOIN US IN THE REALM OF IF."

"It is time."

"THE ROAD AHEAD WILL BE DIFFICULT, AND
DANGEROUS.
"

"LIVES AND LOVES WILL BE LOST AND FOUND. "

"FAITH WILL BE CHALLENGED, AND DESTINIES ALTERED."

"GOOD LUCK, TARA-THAT-IS."

"WE MUST LEAVE YOU NOW."

"PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF."

"THE GODDESS APPROACHES."

And out of the murky darkness, a woman, wreathed in flame, descended.

"Greetings, Tara. My name is Isana, and this is where your true journey begins."

Maybe it was the strangeness of the girl in the other room, but Tara felt uneasy as she awaited Iyam.

A feeling that didn't dissipate, even when he finally arrived. At least he was here, though his presence made her feel no safer.

Safer? Where had that come from?

It didn't matter in the end. Iyam had tp leave on 'business' almost as suddenly as he had arrived. A brief kiss and he was gone.

Strange that a man so big and broad could disappear so easily.

Tara barely heard her bodyguard when he spoke and he had had to repeat himself before she noticed.

"Where to Memsahib?"

"...home."

Maybe at home, the feeling of forboding would go away.

It took nearly forty minutes of driving at a slow crawl for Tara to realise that they had not yet reached her apartment. Her driver turned briefly to explain it was some kind of holy procession.

"Can't you ask them to make way or something?"

One minute the driver was calling out the window to one of the solemn-faced monks and then suddenly he was limp in his seat and the other bodyguard was being pulled out of the window near him. Even worse, the doors either side of her had been wrench open and hands, grasping and clutching, reached for her.

No amount of struggling or kicking, ineffectual as it was in her tight skirt and high heels, could help her escape the arm that dragged her back and the cloth clamped tightly over her face...

...trying not to breathe in...

...the cool relief in her lungs when she finally faltered

...then nothingness.

Sometimes, it seems like she was always waiting for Iyam. Thinking about it? She probably was.

Tara sighed.

Spending the evening in Iyam's nightclub wasn't exactly her idea of a good night. Especially when she was on her own and waiting for her boyfriend.

It was almost a shame he was so attentive and charming when he was there. It made it so much harder to think about leaving him.

If his criminal leanings didn't make it hard enough.

What she wanted most right now though, was some peace and quiet or as close to it as she could get within the immediate radius of the club's thumping sound system.

Grabbing her drink, Tara got up and headed towards the nearest exit. Some fresh air would go well with the relative quiet.
